Steps to Check Your Car Engine Coolant Level
Coolant is a mixture of a chemical solution, most commonly antifreeze and water. The coolant prevents your engine from overheating in summers and freezing in extremely cold weather. Engine coolant is very important as it is responsible for transferring heat and preventing engine damage caused by freezing or boiling. Here are some simple steps to check your engine coolant level.
Procedure for checking car engine coolant level
- STEP 1- WAIT FOR YOUR ENGINE TO COOL DOWN
Before you check the coolant level of your vehicle, it is important to wait for it to cool down. Coolant systems are pressurized and opening the reservoir right after the vehicle has been driven can be very dangerous. Wait at least for an hour or two if you recently have been driving. - STEP 2- FIND THE EXPANSION TANK
Park your vehicle on a flat surface, pop the hood, and locate the reservoir tank to take the coolant level reading. The expansion tank is there so that when the coolant heats up and expands, it has somewhere to go.
- STEP 3- CHECK THE COOLANT LEVEL
Look for an imprinted scale on the side of the tank that shows the maximum and minimum levels and check the current level of the coolant. You should top it up if it’s nearly down or below the minimum level. - STEP 4- FILL UP THE COOLANT
To fill up the coolant, remove the cap of the tank and pour the fluid with the help of a funnel until it reaches the maximum mark. Make sure to use the right ratio of antifreeze to water and the right type of antifreeze. Check your owner’s manual if you are unsure about the ratio and type of antifreeze to be used. Tighten the cap of the tank after filling up the coolant.
It is important to check the coolant level at least twice a year, once in summers and once in winters. If your engine is starved of coolant, it will overheat and will cause expensive damages. Follow the above easy steps and fill up the coolant when necessary.
